Augusto Farfus claims pole position on the legendary Nürburgring-Nordschleife

Augusto Farfus did not just get out of the car – he jumped out of the number 26 BMW Z4 GT3 and was hailed by BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS when he came to the parc fermé after today’s qualifying on the iconic Nürburgring-Nordschleife in Germany. In a time of 8:17.394 minutes, the BMW works driver secured pole position for the 24-hour race for himself and his team-mates Jörg Müller, Nick Catsburg and Dirk Adorf. This is the first pole position for the BMW Z4 GT3 since 2012 and the first time BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS has set the fastest qualifying time in the Eifel Mountains.

“It was one of those perfect days at the Nordschleife – bright sunshine and excellent driving conditions,“ commented Farfus with a big smile on his face. “You don’t necessarily have that too often here. But today everything was just perfect. It is great to be on pole position, and to have completed two clear laps of the Nordschleife without any traffic. That is an awesome experience. I love this race with its special atmosphere. We are fired up as well to deliver the many BMW fans a good result on Sunday.”

Celebrating the pole position with his team and BMW Motorsport, the driver from Curitiba stays realistic at the same time. Farfus, who was the first Brazilian winner at this legendary endurance classic back in 2010, knows very well that the real challenge is still to come: the race from Saturday to Sunday afternoon.

“The starting position is not the be all and end all at a 24-hour race,” said Farfus. But he is confident for the weekend: “We know that we have a strong car and an equally strong team. Hopefully we can capitalise on that in the race and be just as successful as we have been in qualifying.”

The race will start tomorrow, Saturday, at 16:00 local time and will end 24 hours later on Sunday afternoon. Over 150 cars will line up on the grid and among them is a large contingent of BMWs.
